Invisalign: What is it?

February 18, 2020

In recent years, conventional braces have undergone some radical transformations. The days of bulky, uncomfortable braces are long gone. Appliances like these were replaced with alternatives using brackets that are smaller and less prominent. Today's braces are even less noticeable, with enhancements in size, shape and color. Even considering all of that, you may remain unconvinced that this is the way that you want to straighten your smile. Fortunately, another option exists to enhance your oral health and align your teeth.

Image Dental & Orthodontics is happy to offer Invisalign therapy. Patients are increasingly turning to Invisalign as a popular alternative to conventional braces. This creative system does not involve any wires, brackets or bands within your mouth. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign therapy has only been available for two decades. Many people are not even aware of this unique treatment process and how it can correct orthodontic problems.

What is Invisalign?

The innovative Invisalign treatment process involves clear aligners that are custom fitted just for you. Treatment occurs during stages. Once each stage has ended, your current aligners will be replaced with the next set to continually move and adjust your teeth into their desired positions. Normally, this occurs every week or two, depending upon your unique treatment plan.

Does Invisalign straighten teeth more quickly than braces?

For an orthodontic treatment to be successful, your complete commitment is required. Since the aligners used in the process are removable, you will be responsible for wearing them for most of the day during the course of your treatment. Failure to keep your aligners in your mouth can lead to undesirable results and longer treatment times.

How long will my Invisalign treatment take?

There is no standard answer to this question, since each case is different. Patients typically wear their aligners anywhere from 10-15 months and normally go through up to 30 aligners during their treatment. So this is a bit faster than the average treatment time for traditional braces.

What are the advantages to being treated with Invisalign over braces?

You have more freedom and flexibility under the Invisalign system. One of the most infamous aspects of wearing braces are the notorious food restrictions that are required. You have to avoid eating anything chewy or crunchy that can stick to your braces. The Invisalign system allows you to remove your aligners for eating and cleaning.

The fact that Invisalign aligners are removable also means that it is extremely easy to keep up with your oral hygiene routine. If you are wearing brackets, wires and bands, brushing and flossing can be difficult and time-consuming. Special kits are available to clean your aligners using toothpaste and a toothbrush.
