More Than Just A Cavity: What Are The Causes Of Toothaches?

Jan 28, 2019

Toothaches can affect so many aspects of your day. They make you lose focus at work and bring down your mood. The first thought most people have when experiencing tooth pain is that they have a cavity. Research reveals that tooth decay is the leading cause of toothaches. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, over 90% of participants experienced tooth decay. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that 1 in 4 Americans has untreated cavities
Here are some other reasons for toothaches:

Orthodontic alignment (braces, Invisalign, retainers, etc)

Tooth alignment is known to hurt. Braces and Invisalign use pressure to give teeth a perfect look and bite. This pain is noticeable right after the braces are fitted or readjusted. It is supposed to subside in a few days. If the pain is unbearable and lingers for many days, visit your orthodontist.

Misaligned teeth

Teeth that press against each other because they are crooked can result in pain. Even wisdom teeth can be painful when they haven’t come through the gum properly. The teeth can fester and become infected. Bring all such cases to the attention of your dentist. It must be rectified as soon as possible to relieve the pain.

Improper brushing and flossing

Often, people don’t pay much attention when brushing their teeth in the morning and night. They often use this time to procrastinate. If you brush your teeth vigorously, the chances are your gums will begin to bleed. Continuous pressure on your teeth can cause the gums to recede and make teeth unstable. This can cause more pain. Consult your dentist and invest in a ‘super soft’ brush.

1 in 8 adults in the United States experiences sensitive teeth, according to Web MD. Tooth sensitivity is when one experiences sharp pain when something hot or cold comes in contact with their teeth. The enamel on our teeth, the protective layer, wears off, exposing the dentin. Those who invest in teeth whitening also are known to suffer from sensitivity.
Protect your teeth from extreme temperature changes. Use a toothpaste specifically made for sensitivity and consult your dentist for further guidance on treatment options.

Gum disease

Periodontal disease is known to affect 8.52% of the population, according to the Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research.  Gum disease is characterized by dull pain, toothache, bleeding or inflamed gums. The common cause for this disease is the inflammation of the oral bones. If left untreated, it could result in tooth loss. 120million people in the U.S are missing at least one tooth.
