If you’ve lost a tooth, you’re probably unsure of what to do next. You’re probably wondering whether it’s worth replacing. Your teeth don’t work individually. They work together to keep your body functioning. If one of them falls off or gets damaged, it affects more than just your smile.

According to a study published by the American College of Prosthodontists, approximately 178 million Americans have lost at least one tooth in their lifetime. Furthermore, studies also show that 40 million Americans are living without teeth.

Tooth loss isn’t easy to deal with. It comes with various challenges, some of which include:

Should You Get Dental Implants?

Decades ago, the only solution for tooth loss was bridges or dentures. But as technology advanced, different alternatives and solutions made it easier to replace missing teeth. One of these solutions includes dental implants.

But what are dental implants and what can they do for your smile?

Dental implants are synthetic/artificial frames that act as replacements for the roots of decayed or damaged teeth. They’re made from titanium composites and are surgically positioned into the jawbone.

The procedure consists of three parts: the post, abutment, and restoration. Your dentist will first insert screws into your jawbone and then attach the abutment.

Once your dentist has adjusted the implants, he or she will then work towards adding replacement teeth. What makes dental implants a good choice compared to other procedures is that they can be adjusted and customized to resemble natural teeth.

You also don’t feel uncomfortable wearing them because they’re extremely comfortable. In fact, you won’t even realize they’re there!

When Should You Get Dental Implants?

Your dentist will help you figure out whether or not dental implants are suitable for you. In order to get the procedure done, you need to fit certain requirements. You’re eligible for implants if you have:

Excellent Oral Health: Your overall oral hygiene is great. Patients with diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease are not suitable for dental implants.

Adequate Bone Structure: Your jawbone is able to support replacement teeth without any problems. If your jawbone isn’t strong, this can lead to various health problems and your body will reject the implants.

Most people who are required to get dental implants have “pockets” (gaps) in their gums because of missing teeth. If you’re uncomfortable with ordinary bridges and dentures, or they don’t work because of poor ridges, sore spots, or gagging, then your dentist will recommend dental implants.
