The most obvious sign is persistent, intense tooth pain. This is not just some aching here and there, but pain that does not stop and is bad. If your tooth pain doesn’t go away with over-the-counter pain relievers (Advil) and an ice pack, then you may have a problem that needs immediate care by our dentist.

If you experience painful swelling around the tooth, or along the jaw, this could be a sign of an infected tooth or gum. During an infection, an abscess will likely form. An abscess is a pocket of bacterial pus. An abscess won’t go away on its own. You may need an emergency tooth extraction to prevent the infection from spreading to other parts of your body.

You may also need an emergency tooth extraction if your tooth has severe damage. Small cracks and chips in the tooth can often be repaired , but if you have a large break or fracture with a lot pain, then you may need an emergency tooth extraction. A large break can damage the outside of the tooth and inner root.

Ongoing decay, if left untreated, can cause an emergency situation. Decay can allow bacteria to penetrate to the tooth nerve. Decay may be visible as brown or black spots on the surface of the tooth, but may only be seen on X-rays. Sports injuries, vehicle crashes, bicycle accidents, and falling can cause damage to teeth, which can also lead to an emergency tooth extraction.

There are different types of emergency tooth extractions. Simple dental extractions are used when a tooth is visible above the gums. A surgical dental extraction is when our dentist has to cut into the gum, drill the tooth out of the jawbone, or cut the tooth into several pieces. There is also wisdom tooth removal. This is used when a wisdom tooth places pressure against the jawbone and/or roots of the other teeth, and possibly causes Infections and abscesses.

If you are experiencing severe ongoing pain and/or have severely damaged a tooth, our dentist will do everything possible to save your tooth, but it’s not always possible. We always use pain killer during tooth extractions so you should not feel any pain, but you may feel some pressure.
